Nomenclatura de orquídeas

Una de las primeras cosas con que un cultivador novato se encontrará en su camino, es la miríada de nombres extraños en las etiquetas de las plantas. Estos nombres se ven raros y suenan aún más raro. Una vez que en-tiende algo de los nombres, de dónde vienen y dónde son usados, el temor a estos nombres desaparece de la noche a la mañana. La pronunciación de algunos de ellos necesita una pequeña práctica, pero es algo pequeño a vencer.
Primero que todo, los nombres de orquídeas son asignados de acuerdo a un sistema binominal (dos nombres). Es decir, que cada orquídea tiene un nombre de dos partes. Esto es lo mismo que el nombre propio, excepto que está escrito como en un directorio telefónico (por ejemplo: Apellido(s), Nombre(s)). Su nombre aparecerá como “Martínez, Juan”. Un nombre de orquídea aparecerá como “Cattleya Portia”. El primer nombre (Cattle-ya) es el nombre del género y se refiere a un gran grupo de orquídeas que están emparentadas (justo como los miembros de su familia con el mismo apellido). El segundo nombre (Portia), es el nombre de la especie o el nombre del híbrido. Este nombre se refiere a un individuo muy específico dentro del género (justo como el nombre de pila). Este se distingue a un individuo de los otros miembros del género. Usando estos nombres y el sistema binominal, podemos comunicarnos entre nosotros y entender a que orquídea nos estamos refiriendo.
De vez en cuando vemos adiciones al nombre. Estos son usualmente nombres referentes a la variedad o a un subgrupo dentro de especies que son únicamente diferentes de manera general, pero no tanto como para clasi-ficarlos como una especie separada. Un ejemplo puede ser Cattleya bicolor var alba. Hay muchas variedades dentro de una especie. Estas son siempre escritas con la abreviación var para designar una variedad. Estas va-riedades son usualmente reconocidas por autoridades como una parte válida de un nombre oficial y es regis-trada como tal.
